From setting a realistic budget to selecting the right wedding professionals and ensuring that every aspect of your wedding day is coordinated, these DOs and DON’Ts will help you navigate the often-challenging world of planning a wedding. So whether you’re newly engaged or well into the planning process, read on to discover the essential tips that will help ensure your big day is everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more.
Do Not procrastinate in your planning – make sure you engage all of your wedding professionals as soon as possible after you have selected a wedding date. The best and most popular wedding professionals are generally booked and may not be available for your special day.
Do Not book your wedding professionals until you have decided on a budget. It is important to know what you can afford and if you become pressed for money, allow more for the items that are going to have the most impact and less for any non essential “frills”.
Do Not engage wedding professionals for the sole reason that they are the cheapest – more often than not, there are very good reasons why they are so cheap. Be sure to ask questions and ascertain that the professional can meet and exceed your expectations. Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life, ensure that the memories you have of it will be good ones.
Do Not commit with the first wedding professional you speak to. Make sure that you enquire with a minimum of three to allow a proper comparison of services offered. Of course if you have been impressed by the work of a particular professional at another event and you know that they are perfect for your wedding, then booking this particular wedding service provider may save you some time.
Do Not be afraid or shy to ask questions. If you are unsure of something or need information about how the service will be provided ASK!! Quite often, some wedding professionals assume that because they know what to expect at a wedding, that the couple will also know. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with any part of your wedding plans, do not wait until it is too late to ask questions.
Do Not assume everything promised by a wedding professional will be delivered! – Ensure that you obtain confirmation of everything in writing.
Do Not make decisions without first consulting your partner – remember it is their wedding also.
Do Not invite everyone you have ever known (although it is acknowledged that in some cultures this may be difficult) – weddings are expensive.
Do Not worry about everyone else’s advice. Whilst you should certainly consider all advice given to you as there may be some valuable tips, gained from experience, that may help you avoid unwanted situations, it is also important to remember – it is YOUR wedding.
Do allow yourself sufficient time to plan.
Do ensure that a realistic budget and timetable has been outlined. This is important to make sure that you keep on track.
Do organise all of the different components that go to make up a wedding. A folder with separate sections for wedding professionals, appointments, contracts, dress material swatches, etc will prove invaluable.
Do plan, prepare and follow a timetable of events, including appointments, deposits, payments, review of contract items, dress/suit fittings, etc.
Do co-ordinate every facet of the wedding day. In order to ensure that your wedding day is transformed into an “extra special day” every aspect must be coordinated. This is your day and you must be in control.
Do make sure you engage wedding providers that you are comfortable with. If you are uncomfortable speaking or dealing with someone, or if it appears that your questions, enquiries and concerns are being brushed off, then it is probably a good idea to look for someone else who will take your wedding seriously and treat you with the professional courtesy you deserve.
Do make sure that you allow time to take breaks during planning. When you feel that you are getting stressed out or something is irritating you, take a break, go for a walk, step back, do something else for a while. More often than not, decisions that are made under stress or high pressure situations are later regretted.
and last but certainly not least,
Do make sure you enjoy yourself. This will be one of the most memorable times in your whole life. Be certain to spend a significant amount of time with your family, friends and most importantly, your future spouse.
